Postgraduate Internship Training Program

      The Postgraduate Internship Training Program of Chong Hua Hospital is duly accredited by the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges Foundation (APMCF). It is a 12-month rotating internship which allows the postgraduate interns to rotate through different clinical departments and gain exposure to the different clinical subspecialties of medicine.

      The Postgraduate Internship Training Program of Chong Hua Hospital is under the supervision of the Assistant Medical Director for Continuing Medical Education. The Training Officer of each clinical department is responsible for the overall supervision of the PGIs during their rotation through the different clinical departments. The daily activities and the PGI training program for each department are however the direct responsibility of the PGI Coordinator of that department. The PGI Coordinator is appointed by the Training Officer of each department. The PGI Coordinators compose the Committee for Postgraduate Internship Training Program which is under the Assistant Medical Director for Continuing Medical Education.

Application Process
  • The following are the criteria for acceptance of Post Graduate Interns into the Post Graduate Internship Training Program of Chong Hua Hospital:
    • a. A degree of Doctor of Medicine from any recognized medical school in the Philippines.
    • b. A certificate, issued by the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges, authorizing the intern to report to Chong Hua Hospital for internship.
    • c. A certificate of graduation issued by the Dean of his/her medical school.
    • d. Passing the criteria set forth by the Subcommittee on Internship Training Program which are as follows:
      • i. Belongs to the upper 50% of his class.
      • ii. Of good moral character as certified by the Dean of his College and any one member of the Active Staff of this hospital.
      • iii. Should pass an oral examination / interview to be given by the Subcommittee on Internship Training Program if the case permits.
  • 1. Clinical Rotations
    • 1.1. ROTATION
      • All interns shall rotate in the following services for the indicated duration:
      • Internal Medicine2 months
        Community Medicine2 months
        Pediatrics2 months
        Surgery2 months
        OB-GYN7 days
        Family Medicine [Triage]7 days
        Orthopedics7 days
        Radiology15 days
        Opthalmology7 days
        ENT7 days
        Psychiatry7 days
    • 1.2. Overview of Clinical Rotations
      • Each department shall provide the postgraduate intern adequate training to accomplish the objectives of the Internship Training Program through different methodologies. Teaching methods may include bedside rounds, clinical conferences, lectures, group discussions and any other special training programs devised by the department. Adequate supervision by the attending physician and the resident-in-charge shall always be provided for the postgraduate intern. The postgraduate interns shall follow the policies and procedures that are provided for in the PGI Training Program specific to the department through which they are rotating.
      • 1.2.1 Internal Medicine
        • Each intern shall rotate through the subspecialties of Internal Medicine for duration of two (2) months in Chong Hua Hospital. The postgraduate intern shall abide with the policies and procedures of the Department of Internal Medicine during his rotation in the department.
      • 1.2.2. Community Medicine
        • The intern shall be given adequate exposure in order to acquire knowledge in primary health care approach, acquire skills in community immersion, develop their role as catalysts in community development and deliver comprehensive health care to the families in the community. The community medicine rotation is a 2 month rotation under the Department of Family Medicine.
      • 1.2.3. Pediatrics
        • The intern shall be exposed in the care of pediatric patients, the care of newborns, and Preventive Pediatrics through "Well Baby" clinics. The rotation through the Department of Pediatrics is a 2 month rotation in Chong Hua Hospital.
      • 1.2.4. Surgery
        • The intern shall be given adequate exposure in the operative techniques of major and minor surgical procedures as well as training in pre- and postoperative care. Rotation through the Department of Surgery is a 2 month rotation in Chong Hua Hospital. Each intern is required to assist in at least five (5) major and minor surgical procedures.
      • 1.2.5. Obstetrics and Gynecology
        • The intern shall be given adequate training in Maternal and Child care and in the management of gynecologic cases. The postgraduate interns shall be exposed to gynecologic and obstetric operative procedures. The rotation through the Department of OBGYN is a 2 month rotation in Chong Hua Hospital.
        • Each intern is expected to handle the delivery of a minimum of five (5) patients under direct supervision and to assist at the delivery of five (5) other cases.
      • 1.2.6. Family Medicine [Emergency Department and Triage]
        • The intern will gain exposure in the immediate management of emergency cases. Exposure to triaging patients is an important component of this rotation. This is a seven day rotation in Chong Hua Hospital.
      • 1.2.7. Radiology
        • This is a 15-day rotation in the Department of Radiology of Chong Hua Hospital through which the postgraduate intern will be exposed to different radiologic examinations and procedures.
      • 1.2.8. Orthopedics
        • This 7-day rotation where postgraduate interns will gain exposure to the diagnosis and management of common orthopedic cases. This rotation is in Chong Hua Hospital.
      • 1.2.9. Anesthesia
        • This is a 7-day rotation where postgraduate interns will be exposed to different cases requiring different levels and types of anesthesia. This rotation is in Chong Hua Hospital.
    • 1.2. Research Requirements
      • Postgraduate Interns of Chong Hua Hospital are required to submit a Case Report for their research requirements. The intern shall choose an interesting case which he / she encountered in the course of his / her rotations provided this will not be a duplication of the research paper presented by the resident. The choice of the case must be approved by the PGI coordinator and the training officer of the department to which the case belongs to. The postgraduate intern must obtain the permission of the primary attending physician of the case prior to writing the case report. He / she will do a thorough research / review of literature on said topic and will submit the case report to the Office of the Continuing Medical Education on or before January 30 of the year following the start of the postgraduate internship. The date for the case report presentation will be decided by the Committee on Postgraduate Internship with the approval of the Assistant Medical Director for CME.
